  • Publisher Herbert S. Bailey, Jr., Dies at 89

    Herbert S. Bailey, Jr., former director of Princeton University Press, died on June 28. He was 89. Bailey, who was director of PUP from 1945 to 1986, joined the house in 1946 as a science editor.

  • Zev Birger, an Appreciation

    The death June 6 of Zev Birger—the brilliant, charming, irrepressible director of the biennial Jerusalem International Book Fair, and Israel's champion promoting the flow of literature and culture between countries for many decades—from injuries sustained when he was struck by a motorcycle while crossing the street shocked and saddened thousands of people in many spheres of Zev's life, and most certainly in our publishing world. He had just celebrated his 85th birthday, vibrant, energetic, and already in talks about programs for the next fair in 2013.

    Zev Birger, longtime head of the Jerusalem International Book Fair, and Harriette Dorsen, general counsel for Bantam Doubleday Dell and then Random House, have both died.

  • Cavin Memorial Today

    A celeberation of the life of Ruth Cavin will be held later today at 5:30 at the Salmagundi Club, located at 47 Fifth Avenue. A reception will follow. Cavin died in January at the age of 92. For the past 22 years, Cavin was associate publisher of Thomas Dunne Books, where she acquired and edited some 900 books.

  • William C. Kohler, Dead at 76

    William C. Kohler, founder of Vantage sales and marketing, died April 30 in Ocean City, N.J. He was 76.

  • Former Morrow V-P James Finkenstaedt Dies

    James C. Finkenstaedt, former vice-president of William Morrow, died March 19. He was 90. Finkenstaedt, who had been active in the civil rights movement since the '50s, was influential in bringing well-known African-American writers to Morrow, such as Nikki Giovanni and Amiri Baraka

  • Wynne Jones Dies at 76

    British fantasy author Diana Wynne Jones died on Saturday. She was 76. Jones, who had been writing fantasy novels for over 35 years, won a number of awards, including the British Fantasy Society’s Karl Edward Wagner Award and, in 2007, the Life Achievement Award from the World Fantasy Organization.

  • Edward Knappman Dies at 67

    On March 10, Edward W. Knappman died from an infection that resisted antibiotics. Knappman, former president of New England Publishing Associates, was 67.

  • Walter Zacharius, Dead at 87

    Walter Zacharius, visionary founder and chairman emeritus of Kensington Publishing, a passionate philanthropist, author, book industry innovator and easily one of the smartest, most gracious and thoroughly likeable people in the book industry, died March 2, 2011 in New York City. He was 87.

  • YA Author L.K. Madigan Dies at 47

    Lisa Kay Wolfson, who published two novels under the pseudonym, L.K. Madigan, died Wednesday in Portland, Ore. She was 47. Wolfson's first novel, Flash Burnout (Houghton Mifflin, 2009) won the 2010 William C. Morris Debut Award, a prize given by the ALA for the best YA book by a first-time author.

  • YA Author and Movie Producer Perry Moore Dies

    Perry Moore, author, director and movie producer, died February 17 at his home in New York City. He was 39 and the cause of his death has not been determined.

  • Margaret K. McElderry Dies at 98

    Legendary children's book editor and publisher Margaret K. McElderry died Monday. February 14, at the age of 98. In a 1997 New York Times profile, the Times's Eden Ross Lipson called McElderry "the last of her class of editors who brought American children's books into the postwar world."

  • Janet Schulman Dies at 77

    Author, anthologist, and children's book publisher Janet Schulman died Friday, February 11, from complications due to lung cancer. She was 77. Schulman, who began her publishing career in 1959 at Macmillan, worked for more than 30 years at Random House, where, among other things, she was the last editor there to edit Dr. Seuss.

  • Brian Jacques, 1939-2011

    Brian Jacques, author of the bestselling Redwall series, died after a heart attack on Saturday, February 5. He was 71. The Redwall fantasy series, set in a world populated with anthropomorphized animals, began in 1986 with Redwall, which was published in the U.S. by Philomel. Since, the series has been published in more than 20 countries and has sold more than 20 million copies.

  • George Edward Stanley, 1942-2011

    George Edward Stanley, author of more than 100 books for young people, died on Monday, February 7, after a ruptured aneurysm; he was 68. After writing and publishing over 200 short stories in American, British, Irish, and South African magazines, Stanley turned to writing books.

  • Memorial Service Set for Manie Barron

    A memorial service will be held February 5 for literary agent Manie Barron, who passed away January 8. The service will be held at St. Bartholomew’s Church, 325 Park Ave. in New York City.

  • Agent Abner Stein Dies

    Longtime agent Abner Stein died earlier this month. Stein worked at various American houses before moving to London in the 1960s to join Sphere Books. In 1971 he launched his own eponymous agency, representing American publishers and agents, as well as British and other clients.

  • Manie Barron Dead at 56

    Literary agent and former bookseller Emanuel Joseph Barron, known throughout the publishing industry as Manie, died January 8 from a hemorrhage while being treated for lung cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He was 56.
