Obituary: Joan Steiner
Joan Steiner, creator of the Look-Alikes series of books, died September 8 of cancer at her home in Claverack, N.Y. Steiner's first children's book, Look-Alikes, was published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers in 1998. Look-Alikes was named a best book of the year by several publications, including PW; the series sold more than one million copies in 16 languages worldwide.

Thomas Guinzburg, Paris Review Founder and Viking President, Dies at 84
Thomas Guinzburg, one of the founders of the Paris Review and the former president of Viking, the publishing house founded by his father, died on Wednesday at 84. He was listening to the U.S. Open in Manhattan when he died, according to the New York Times.

Seeking Salinger: Meditation Center Remembers Late Author
Four letters that J.D. Salinger wrote to the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Center of New York in the 1960s and 1970s reveal the author's familiarity with meditation and the teachings of Vedanta. The letters have now been posted to the center's Web site. Cosmic coincidence? Salinger's home in New Hampshire wasn't far from Skylight Paths in Vermont, which publishes material from the New York center.

Obituary: Sheila Lukins
Sheila Lukins, co-author of The Silver Palate Cookbook and The New Basics Cookbook, and author Celebrate!, Ten and other cookbooks, died yesterday. The cause was brain cancer, diagnosed three months ago. Lukins was 66.
