The Essex, Conn.–based Globe Pequot Publishing Group has acquired nearly all titles published by Rio Nuevo Publishers since its inception in Tucson in 1999.

Founded by publisher-photographer Ross Humphreys and author Susan Lowell, Rio Nuevo’s titles focus on arts and crafts, cooking, history, gardening, memoirs, Native America, nature, spirituality, and travel. The publisher has specialized in cultivated local authors and photographers to produce well-researched Southwestern regional titles with a strong visual design, such as Navajo Code Talker Manual. The company launched its dedicated children’s imprint, Rio Chico, in 2011 focused on picture books also set in Southwestern places.

The acquisition also brings together Lowell’s titles published by Rio Nuevo with her prior series Three Little Javelinas published by another Globe Pequot imprint, Rising Moon. Rio Nuevo, which has about 45 titles, will continue as a Globe Pequot imprint.

“The addition of Rio Nuevo gives Globe Pequot a much stronger selection of Southwestern titles and continues the expansion of our nationwide regional publishing focus," said Robert Marsh, president of Globe Pequot, in a statement.

The Rio Nuevo purchase is Globe Pequot's fourth acquisition this year following deals for Bower House Books, Square One Publishers, and Waterford Press.
