Trade paperbacks and e-books, benefiting from the success of the Fifty Shades trilogy, were the big winners in July, according to AAP’s Monthly StatShot. Sales in the trade paperback category rose 49.7%, to $145.4 million, at the publishers that report to AAP, while e-book sales increased 47.4%, to $120.1 million, in July. Sales in the children/young adult segment slowed in July, down 9.5%, though sales through the first seven months of the year were still up 33.2%. In July, declines in print formats in the segment offset an 89.9% increase in e-book sales, to $17.7 million, at reporting companies. StatShot figures are based on reports from 1,184 publishers.
