Unit sales of print books rose 3% for the week ended Aug. 3, 2014, compared to the corresponding week last year, at outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan, marking the fourth consecutive week of year-over-year gains. Year-to-date total unit sales, meanwhile, maintain a 1% edge over 2013. While there were no major debuts this week, several paperback and mass market editions of titles from perennial bestselling authors showed well on their first week out: a paperback edition of Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand sold just over 30,000 copies, while new mass market editions of David Baldacci’s King and Maxwell and Lisa Jackson’s Deserves to Die both racked up around 24,000 copies each. Juvenile fiction continues its strong year, with sales up 15% both for the year to date and for week ended Aug. 3. Though sales are slowing on YA blockbuster titles—unit sales of Veronica Roth’s Four are down 8% from last week, and John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars (combined paperback and movie tie-in edition) are also down 8%—they are still outselling their adult counterparts: Four sold about 47,000 print copies last week; Danielle Steel’s A Perfect Life, which tops the hardcover fiction list, sold just shy of 21,000 copies.
