Unit sales of print books rose 1% in the week ended Sept. 28, 2014, compared to the similar week last year, at outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan. As usual, juvenile nonfiction had the strongest performance, with units ahead 24% over the week ended Sept. 29, 2013. The segment benefitted from yet another Minecraft title moving up the list: Minecraft: Cartoon Handbook landed at #2 on the nonfiction list, selling over 14,000 copies in its first full week on sale. That made the four Scholastic-published Minecraft titles the top four juvenile nonfiction titles in the week, with a total of over 56,000 units sold. James Dashner was the new ruler of the juvenile fiction list, placing four books among the six bestselling titles in the category. The Maze Runner, which benefited from a screen adaptation released in September, was the top juvenile fiction bestseller, and Dashner’s four titles on the list sold over 81,000 copies in the week at outlets that report to BookScan. The top-selling new release in the week was Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard’s Killing Patton, which sold over 163,000 copies, helping to lift adult nonfiction sales.
