Stephen Mesquita, who writes the Travel Publishing Year Book using data from NPD BookScan, gave us a sneak peek at the state of the world travel guides market—guides and series of guides whose coverage includes countries outside the U.S.—for the first half of 2017. “It’s been the best six months in the market for many years,” Mesquita says, with sales of printed guides in the first six months of 2017 up 6% from the first six months of 2016.

Here are the top 10 world travel guide publishers for 2017 so far. Note that CreateSpace moved up a notch from its 2016 position to crack the top 10. Mesquita says that self-publishing has been an increasingly strong presence in travel publishing, not just in narrative writing but also with guidebooks. CreateSpace’s top-selling travel book this year to date is the 2014 guide Real Havana by Mario Rizzi.
