Can you say semiquincentennial? I can’t, but I have a feeling we’re all going to learn how to this spring, as the U.S. gears up for its 250th birthday celebration on July 4. To mark the occasion, publishers have stocked their spring and summer lists with a treasure trove of books on the good, bad, and ugly of American history, from a sprawling novel of the Apache Wars to a monumental new biography of landscape painter Frederic Church and a pair of histories about an infamous 1980s New York City subway shooting.

Back in September, we invited publishers to submit information on books publishing between Feb. 1 and July 31, 2026. Our hardworking editors then combed through the thousands of submissions to select spring and summer’s most notable titles in 13 categories. As always, each category has a top 10 list and a longlist of books with a certain something special about them. (There’s also a searchable database of all the submitted titles at publishersweekly.com/previews.)

Be sure to check back in the new year for our religion and spirituality preview on Jan. 12, our comics and graphic novels preview on Jan. 26, and our children’s preview on Feb. 2.

In the meantime, happy reading!
